Review: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at Ambassadors Theatre

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Five Stars)

After being swept away by the emotional depth and creativity of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at Southwark Playhouse Elephant in 2023, I was beyond excited to hear the show was transferring to the Ambassadors Theatre in the West End. If you think you know what to expect, having read F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story or seen the 2008 film starring Brad Pitt, think again.

The premise remains familiar: Benjamin Button is born old and ages in reverse, a life marked by loneliness, confusion and an aching search for love. But rather than the American setting of the original story and the movie, this production transposes the narrative into a Cornish fishing village, where the rhythm of folk music and stunning imagery of the moon, tide and sand mirror Benjamin’s unique life journey.

From the moment we meet Benjamin as a dignified elderly gentleman, there’s an undeniable warmth in the character. The audience instantly grows fond of him, sympathizing with his isolation as he is hidden away out of shame. As Benjamin begins to grow younger, we accompany him on his journey into the world where he finds Elowen, a local girl with whom he embarks on a tragic love story.

One of the highlights of the show is the ensemble cast of actor-musos. The cast’s ability to move effortlessly between characters and instruments adds an extra layer of magic, as the music becomes more than just a backdrop: it is an integral part of the storytelling. Darren Clark’s music captures the sweeping highs and somber lows of this unconventional love story, perfectly complementing the show’s emotional range.

Jethro Compton’s book and lyrics give life to the story with wit, heart and poetic lyricism, while his direction and stunning set design further elevate the production. Compton’s cohesive vision ensures that every element of the show works in harmony, creating a rich, immersive experience.

Overall, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a spellbinding musical that takes F Scott Fitzgerald’s story and transforms it into something entirely new and exhilarating. With its brilliant ensemble, mesmerizing music and emotional depth, this is a show that will stay with you long after the final curtain falls.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is currently booking at Ambassadors Theatre until May 2025.
